1. The V number is an assured minimum, not a peak speed
Video Speed Class describes minimum sequential write performance under the SD standard's defined conditions. V60 represents 60 MB/s and V90 represents 90 MB/s. Those figures are different from the larger maximum read or write numbers printed elsewhere on a package.
A camera needs consistent writing while recording. A high burst benchmark cannot substitute for the sustained class named in the camera manual. The same distinction matters when comparing two cards that advertise similar peak speeds but carry different V markings.

2. The camera manual decides between them
Resolution alone is not enough. Two 4K modes can use different codecs, frame rates, bit depths, compression structures, and bitrates. One may accept V30, another may require V60, and a demanding All-Intra or high-frame-rate mode may call for V90.
Use the camera maker's current manual and approved-media list for the exact recording menu setting. Check capacity footnotes too: a manufacturer may qualify only certain capacities in a card family. When the manual says V90, buying V60 because its theoretical byte rate appears sufficient adds avoidable risk.
3. Convert bitrate only as a planning check
Divide megabits per second by eight to estimate megabytes per second. A 400 Mbps stream is about 50 MB/s, while 600 Mbps is about 75 MB/s. That arithmetic explains why V60 and V90 exist, but it does not replace host qualification, recording overhead, or conservative camera requirements.
The SD Association recommends matching the speed-class symbol required by the host with the same or a higher class on the card. Treat the calculated byte rate as context and the device requirement as the purchase rule.
4. V90 may help bursts and ingest—but only in a complete UHS-II chain
A faster supported card can shorten buffer-clearing time after a still-photo burst. The size of the improvement depends on the camera controller, file format, burst depth, and card implementation, so camera-specific tests are more useful than package numbers.
V90 cards also tend to be positioned with faster read performance. Faster ingest requires a UHS-II reader, a suitable cable, and a computer port that can sustain the transfer. A UHS-I slot or reader forces the card onto the slower fallback path.
5. Choose value after compatibility
For a camera whose demanding modes require V60, compare qualified V60 cards by capacity, warranty, seller quality, and price. Pay the V90 premium only for a specific benefit: a required mode, proven buffer improvement, or meaningful ingest savings.
Test every new card in the highest mode you plan to use, format it in camera, and keep enough media to avoid erasing the only copy. Speed class does not protect against loss, counterfeit capacity, accidental formatting, or a missing backup.
