CFexpress Type B buying guide for photo and video
Choose a CFexpress Type B card by checking camera compatibility, sustained write performance, VPG markings, capacity, thermals, and reader speed.
1. Type B is a physical format, not a generic label
CFexpress uses PCI Express and NVMe, but the standard includes Type A, Type B, and Type C form factors. They are different sizes. A Type A card will not substitute for Type B simply because both say CFexpress.
Type B shares its dimensions and connector with XQD. Some XQD cameras gained CFexpress Type B support through firmware, but compatibility is a camera-specific decision. Check the manufacturer before assuming interchangeability.
2. Approved-media lists matter
Camera manufacturers test particular capacities and firmware versions for demanding modes. An unlisted card may still work, but the approved list gives stronger evidence for RAW video, high frame rates, long takes, and burst shooting.
Read the footnotes. A card may be approved only for certain capacities or recording modes, and a manufacturer may update the list after new media or firmware ships.
3. Sustained write speed is the important video number
Peak write speed describes a best case and may be achieved only briefly. Long-form recording needs a rate the card can maintain while it heats up and manages flash in the background. Look for a clearly stated minimum sustained write figure and reputable independent testing.
The CompactFlash Association's Video Performance Guarantee markings are designed to identify a minimum sustained write performance for video. Match the card, camera requirement, and recording mode rather than buying by the highest peak number.
4. Capacity changes both workflow and risk
High-resolution RAW and high-frame-rate recording can consume hundreds of gigabytes quickly. Estimate minutes per card using the camera's published bitrate, then include headroom. A larger card reduces swaps but concentrates more footage in one place.
Two appropriately sized cards may support safer rotation and parallel ingest. One larger card may be simpler for long events. The correct choice depends on recording time, backup workflow, and whether the camera has a second slot.
5. Budget for the reader and cooling behavior
Fast cards need a reader and host connection that can use them. A slow reader turns ingest into the bottleneck. Match the reader to Type B and to a suitably fast USB or Thunderbolt connection, and use the supplied cable or a cable with a known data rating.
Cards and readers can become hot during long transfers. That is not automatically a defect, but sustained performance may change with temperature. Give the reader airflow and avoid handling hot media immediately after demanding camera use.

Is the highest advertised write speed the best buying metric?
