How many photos fit on a 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB card?

Estimate JPEG and RAW photo capacity from average file size, understand why the number changes, and choose a practical card size without relying on a misleading fixed count.

1. Use file size, not megapixels alone

Megapixels influence file size, but they do not determine it by themselves. JPEG quality, RAW bit depth, lossless or lossy compression, subject detail, noise, cropping modes, and whether the camera records JPEG plus RAW all change the amount of space used per shutter press.

Take a representative set of photos using the settings you normally use, then find the average file size on a computer. That real average gives a better estimate than a generic chart for the same megapixel count.

2. Apply the simple capacity formula

For a planning estimate, multiply the labeled capacity in gigabytes by 1,000, then divide by the average image size in megabytes. A 128GB card and 50MB average RAW file gives 128,000 divided by 50, or about 2,560 images.

The camera will report fewer because formatted capacity, file-system structures, thumbnails, databases, and file-size variation consume space. Treat the calculation as a planning number, not a promise.

3. Compare common photo file sizes

The table uses nominal decimal capacity and rounded image counts. A 10MB average can represent efficient JPEGs, while 25MB may represent larger JPEGs or compressed RAW from some cameras. Fifty to 100MB is common territory for higher-resolution RAW workflows, but your files may fall outside these examples.

4. Count a RAW+JPEG pair as one capture

When the camera saves both formats, add the average RAW and JPEG sizes before dividing. A 50MB RAW plus a 15MB JPEG uses about 65MB per shutter press, so a nominal 128GB card holds roughly 1,969 paired captures before overhead and variation.

Burst modes can create additional files, and pixel-shift or focus-bracketing features may record several source images for one final result. Plan from the files the camera actually writes, not only the finished image you expect to keep.

5. Choose capacity around risk and workflow

A larger card reduces swaps and helps at long events, but it also places more of the job on one piece of media. Two smaller cards support rotation and may make it easier to separate sessions. Dual-slot backup requires two compatible cards with enough capacity for the same workload.

Leave working headroom, replace questionable cards, and copy files before reformatting. Capacity is convenience; it is not redundancy. No estimate changes the need for another copy of important photographs.
